results survival at 1-year, 2-years, 3-years and 5-years was 73.2%, 45.4%, 33.2% and 14.9% respectively. procedure-related mortality was 1.4%. multivariate analysis showed lesion diameter, child-pugh classification, alcohol abuse, tumor response and afp prior tace as independent prognostic factors of survival. patients diagnosed during surveillance had significantly better survival rates compared to those diagnosed after development of symptoms (hr = 0.58, 95%ci: 0.33-1.01, p < 0.05). conclusions tace is safe and efficient for unrespectable hcc. alcohol abuse, tumor burden, response criteria, child-pugh and afp prior to the session were identified as independent predictors of survival whereas, adherence to surveillance programs resulted in significantly better survival in these patients. patients and methods seventy one patients enrolled for this study (mean follow-up:24.6 months). 100 mg cisplatin, 50 mg doxorubicin and 10 ml lipiodol as well as embolic materials were used. ct-scans and blood tests were obtained prior and post-tace. kaplan–meier method and cox proportional hazard model were used to evaluate survival and factors affecting survival. background trans-arterial chemoembolization (tace) is associated with better survival in bclc-stage b patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (hcc) and child-pugh a whereas in child-pugh b there is no definite evidence of benefit. objectives to assess the safety and efficacy of tace during routine clinical practice in a consecutive greek cohort of patients with unrespectable hcc.

transcatheter arterial chemoembolization therapy for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma

conclusions we showed that in treatment of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, tace significantly improved the disease and the overall survival rate. also, we introduce the tumor size, serum alp level, and number of liver involved segments as prognostic factors of the procedure. finally, tace can be recommended as the initial treatment for unresectable hcc patients. background ...

Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization Therapy for Patients With Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma

BACKGROUND Although transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been widely used as a palliative treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), its actual efficacy and prognostic usefulness have not been clarified in past studies. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study is to investigate the efficacy, complications, and prognostic factors of the TACE in unresectable HCC patients. ...

Comparison of yttrium-90 radioembolization and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma.

PURPOSE To compare the effectiveness and toxicity of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (chemoembolization) and yttrium-90-labeled microspheres (radioembolization) in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Outcomes from patients who underwent radioembolization or chemoembolization as the only treatment for unresectable HCC from 1996 to 2006 were...

Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization for Infiltrative Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Clinical Safety and Efficacy and Factors Influencing Patient Survival

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the safety and efficacy of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with infiltrative hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to identify the prognostic factors associated with patient survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty two patients who underwent TACE for infiltrative HCC were evaluated between 2007 and 2010. The maximum diameter of the tumors ranged fro...

Prognostic significance of serum procalcitonin in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma treated with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization

Although procalcitonin (PCT) is a valid marker for early diagnosis of bacterial infections, its accuracy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of PCT in patients with unresectable HCC treated with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE).A total of 509 patients with unresectable HCC initially treated wi...
